New York, NY (October 12, 2006) — The Skin Cancer Foundation announced today that more than a $1 million was raised during their annual Skin Sense Award Gala Wednesday night.
Celebrities Christie Brinkley, Bernadette Peters, Meryl Streep, Joel Grey, Juliana Margulies and Tony Sirico were in attendance to help support the Foundation and its important mission. As the evening's host, writer and director Nora Ephron kept the audience engaged and entertained. The Skin Sense Award Gala honors those who have played a pivotal role in educating the public about the importance of sun protection at a time when skin cancer is increasing at epidemic rates. This year's event honored Sarah Brown, Beauty Director, Vogue; and Neil Fiske, CEO, Bath & Body Works. "The evening exceeded our expectations," said Patricia Wexler, MD, Gala Benefit Chair. "It is wonderful to have such highly regarded industry leaders and celebrities supporting skin cancer awareness." The gala brought together foremost dermatologists and more than 500 leaders in the beauty, cosmetic, fragrance, skin care, fashion, retail, and publishing industries who are committed to the Foundation's mission of increasing public and professional awareness about the prevention, detection, and treatment of skin cancer. All proceeds from the gala will fund The Skin Cancer Foundation's national public education campaign focusing on prevention and early detection of skin cancer. "We are delighted with the success of this year's event," said Perry Robins, MD, President, The Skin Cancer Foundation. "We've had tremendous support and we are very appreciative to everyone involved." The Skin Cancer Foundation is the only global organization solely devoted to the prevention, detection and treatment of skin cancer. The mission of the Foundation is to decrease skin cancer incidence and mortality by means of public and professional education, medical training and research.
