Senior Services
  • Distribute information to senior citizen's centers and to visiting health services regarding the prevention and early detection of skin cancers.  Use Senior Citizen's Week as an opportunity for educating older adults about sun-safe behavior.
  • Encourage participants to wear protective clothing and bring broad-brimmed hats and UV-filtering sunglasses for use on outdoor excursions.
  • Encourage the application of SPF 15 or higher sunscreen before excursions.
  • Review available shade at senior citizens' centers, libraries, parks and gardens.
  • Schedule outdoor excursions and other activities to avoid the hours between 10 am and 3 pm.  Ensure that there are frequent "shade breaks": times to rest in sheltered areas.
  • All staff working predominately with older people should be educated to give appropriate advice on early detection of skin cancers.

Action plan:

Work with the local medical society or medical center to organize a skin cancer screening at senior centers.
