- Provide educational activities for children attending the preschool and their parents, including teaching children, when age appropriate, to use sunscreen regularly. Take-home activities reinforce the educational message at school.
- Encourage staff to be sun-safe role models. Staff should encourage parents to provide broad-brimmed hats and protective clothing and should make sure children wear hats when outdoors.
- Encourage parents to apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreen before sending their children to school and to send along extra to be reapplied during the day.
- Encourage staff to reapply sunscreen to all exposed skin if children are outdoors for more than two hours total.
- Ensure that there is adequate shade in play areas. Encourage4 staff to place play equipment in shade.
- Organize outdoor activities before 10 am and after 3 pm to avoid the peak sunlight hours.
- Make sunscreen application part of "Safety Checklist." Equip all first aid kits with SPF 15 or higher sunscreen.
Action plan:
Have preschool logo and/or decoration appealing to youngsters printed on broad-brimmed hats and long-sleeved jerseys in both children's and adults' sizes. They can be sold as fund-raisers, and will help identify the school at the same time as providing sun protection to wearers.
