- Incorporate sun-safe education into existing programs and activities where possible. This can be achieved through public displays and recreation-based activities. Include information about sun safety in publicity for events and application forms for programs. Use banners and signs at the event to promote sun protection.
- Encourage program staff to be positive role models by wearing suitable hats and clothing.
- Encourage the use of SPF 15 or higher sunscreen by all employees and program participants.
- Conduct programs near shade where possible. Erect shade structures for use at community events.
- Organize major outdoor events and attractions to avoid the peak sunlight hours of 10 am to 4 pm.
- Ensure that programs do not have rules that require people to stand in the sun unprotected for long periods.
- Offer "A Spot of Shade" - a covered seating area for attendees to rest in a sun-protected location.
Action plan:
Provide free exhibit space for a Sun Safety/Sun Awareness information center. Offer brochures on sun protection and skin cancer prevention and detection from The Skin Cancer Foundation. Approach sunscreen manufacturers to request free sunscreen samples for distribution.
