- Provide information to caregivers and teachers on the importance on instilling sun-protection behavior in children, including teaching children, when age-appropriate, to use sunscreen properly.
- Encourage caregivers or staff to be sun-safe role models.
- Encourage parents to apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreens before sending their children to daycare and to send along a supply to be reapplied during the day.
- Encourage staff to reapply to all exposed skin if children are outdoors for more than two hours total.
- Ensure that there is adequate shade in play areas.
- Encourage caregivers to organize outdoor activities before 10 am and after 4 pm, to avoid the peak sunlight hours.
- Encourage the local agency in charge of child care to include the provision of shade on its "Safety Checklist."
- Review local policy to ensure that sun protection is promoted.
Action plan:
Umbrellas are an easy and novel way to provide shade for children in sandboxes and other sunny play areas. They can be anchored into plastic-capped metal holders, which are placed permanently into the ground and do not protrude, so they can be mown over but not tripped over.
