One in five Americans will develop skin cancer during his or her lifetime.
That works out to more than 3,000,000 new cases annually, and more than 10,000 deaths. Epidemic increases are being seen in all types of skin cancer. In the majority of cases, the cause is exposure to the sun.
Traditionally, sun protection has been viewed as a personal matter. Public education efforts have focused on what individuals can do to protect themselves and their families from excessive sun exposure. But many believe it is time for action in a larger arena. We invite you to get involved in raising awareness in your community, schools and your elected officials.
Every voice, action and effort is another important step towards reducing and preventing skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Awareness Icon |
|
After evaluating hundreds of icons from talented designers all over the world, and tabulating over 1,200 of votes from supporters like you, we are proud to unveil our brand new skin cancer awareness icon! The sun and ribbon icon was the overwhelming choice of our supporters, receiving over 66% of the vote.
With more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the United States every year, it’s incredibly important that we spread the word to everyone who will listen. This icon gives the Foundation a symbol that can easily be adopted by each of the millions of people who have been personally affected by skin cancer. And every time someone new joins the effort, they will promote the icon to their friends and followers.
How can you help us spread the word?

Other Great Ways to Get Involved
|
|
Another way to show you care is by making an appointment for a skin exam for a loved one. Skin cancer affects more than one million Americans every year, but most are 100 percent curable when caught early; an annual skin exam is the best way to do that. Our Physician Finder will help you find a dermatologist in your area.

W. T. Clarke Middle School |
The Skin Cancer Foundation would like to thank the students and staff of W. T. Clarke Middle School, in Westbury, NY, for their recent donation. The students participated in Penny Harvest, a philanthropic program administered by Common Cents. “Too often we feel that unless we do something grand, it doesn't mean anything," says Debbie Marks, a special education teacher at the middle school. "But those pennies add up, and even children with few resources can work together to make the world a better place.” Click here to donate now to The Skin Cancer Foundation. |

The Skin Cancer Foundation would like to thank the students in Susan Rehkamp’s 2nd grade class at Burgess Elementary School in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, for their generous donation.
"Each year, for probably the past 16 years, my 2nd grade class sells pencils," said teacher Susan Rehkamp. "Then the students come up with 14 charities, and each of those charities gets 10 dollars.
"Skin cancer was very big this year," she said. "We do discuss the dangers of too much sun."
The students' donation comes at the end of a unit on doing good deeds, added Susan. "We talk about all the reasons why we give to others."
Thank you for giving to The Skin Cancer Foundation.
